English Language Requirements
English is the language of instruction at the University of Adelaide. Therefore, you will need to be proficient in speaking, listening, reading and writing in English
Demonstrating the required level of English language proficiency is a minimum requirement and your application will not be accepted if you do not meet the requirements.
English language proficiency requirements
In order to meet the English language proficiency requirements for our 100% online postgraduate programs, you must meet one of the below options:
- Australian citizen or Permanent Resident of Australia.
- Citizen of an English speaking country: USA, UK, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, or the Republic of Ireland.
- Completion of one of the following accredited English language tests within the last two (2) years:
- IELTS (International English Language Testing System) - Academic Test
- Overall band score of 6.5 AND Band score of 6.0 in all bands.
- Completion of the TAFE SA English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Advanced is equivalent to an IELTS of 6.5.
- TOEFL - Available online and in-person
- Internet-based: total score of 79 with a minimum of 21 in Writing, 18 in Speaking and 13 in Reading and Listening.
- Paper-based: total score of 577 with a minimum of 4.5 in the Test of Written English (TWE).
- Pearson Test of English - Academic
- Overall score of 58 AND Skills profile of no less than 50 in all skills.
- Please note that at this stage the university only accepts PTE tests taken at a test centre - Home Edition tests cannot be used.
- C1 Advanced (formerly Cambridge English: Advanced or CAE)
- Overall score of 176 AND Individual score of 169 in all skills.
- IELTS (International English Language Testing System) - Academic Test
- Studied at Bachelor level or above at an institution recognised by the University of Adelaide, or an Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) Level 5 (Diploma) or Level 6 (Advanced Diploma) qualification (excluding pre-registered Nursing programs) at an institution in Australia.
- Must have been studied in a) at least 1 of the last 2 years, or b) at least 2 of the past 5 years.
- In order to prove this, please provide detailed official transcripts showing when study was performed, in addition to the completion certificate (if completed).
- Must be from an English-speaking country (as noted in #2 above), or at an institution recognized on the World Higher Education Database as teaching only in English.
- The University may accept other evidence of proficiency in English in individual cases. For example, secondary or tertiary studies undertaken in a country where English is widely used.
Please note: Before you can enrol into classes in Access Adelaide, you are required to complete the Enrolment Checklist. If you are a domestic student, you will need a Unique Student Identifier (USI) before you can enrol in your courses.
