Data Science: Can You Change the World? Yes, You Can!
Guest post by Dr Michael Baron, Data Science Lead Facilitator for the University of Adelaide MBA Program
Growing up, we often dream of changing the world to make it a better place. Unfortunately, as we get older, we may give up on our dreams of making a real difference as we feel like we would require some superpowers in order to deliver real change.
However, not all superpowers can be attributed to magic, some we can learn. One superpower may include wanting to reduce the number of pedestrians dying and getting seriously injured in road accidents. Although we may not be able to simply wish for the accidents to stop happening, we can learn skills that can help save lives.
We can learn skills that can help save lives.
The very first step is to collect as much information on the road accidents as possible. Once completed, the next step is to organise the data collected and to deploy state-of-art Data Analytics techniques to investigate and understand the reasons underpinning behind these accidents. Upon completion of our analysis, we can share our findings with wider community, as well as the government bodies responsible for managing our roads in order for them to take action based on our findings. For example, in my home state of Victoria, Analysis of the Pedestrian Crashes has been used to reduce fatalities and injuries.
The above example is just one of many superpowers, or skills, you can learn to deploy through our programs. Whether you’re a data scientist looking to enhance your skills or making your way through the industry, a University of Adelaide data science qualification will teach you how to effectively articulate the significance of data and acquire skills to change the world. By the time you are enter final stages of your program, you will be able to start masterminding your magic through a variety of channels including improving quality of medical care, fighting climate change, or tackling famine in third-world countries.
