Assignment marking -developing customisable templates using 'Mindtrail' software
Ian Nuberg & Margaret Cargill
Presenter's biographical details
Ian Nuberg lectures in agroforestry, general agriculture and communications in the Department of Agronomy and Farming Systems. He is concerned that students not only 'learn the material' but also integrate this knowledge to broaden their view of the world and themselves. He is therefore interested in qualitative assessment methods.
Margaret Cargill holds a joint ACUE/FANRS position which focuses on helping all students develop excellent learning and communication skills. She seeks to integrate the teaching and assessment of these skills into core course content at all levels.
Abstract
The software package 'Mindtrail' allows markers to produce effective individualised feedback reports on students' assignments in less time than it takes to write comments by hand. However, the time required to set the software up for a particular assignment may deter prospective users. In this project we will develop templates in 'Mindtrail' reflecting the assessment criteria ANRS Faculty lecturers commonly use, which can be easily adapted by lecturers for specific assignments. The templates will incorporate comment options directing students to relevant resources. This display demonstrates templates for a first year essay and a 3rd year project, including sample reports for students and the process used by the lecturers to produce the reports.
